Marriages among people in their 20s to 40s continue to decline, but the exact opposite is happening among those in their 50s.
According to Statistics Korea, the number of women over 50 who tied the knot increased from 14,932 in 2017 to 15,725 last year.
That contrasts sharply with the decline in marriages among women under 50 from 249,523 to 223,434 over the same period.
The trend is the same for men, rising from 20,464 to 21,510 among the over-50s.
Experts cite three main reasons. First, divorce keeps rising, so many of the new older couples are probably on their second marriage. Government data shows that the number of men who tie the knot again after divorcing rose from 18,338 in 2017 to 18,863 in 2019, while the number increased from 14,027 to 14,710 among women.
Another factor is the sheer number of people over 50 compared to the overall population. People over 50 are Korea’s baby boomers and were born between 1955 and 1963, before the government started to try and limit the number of children Koreans had.
According to Statistics Korea, the number of people aged over 50 increased from 19.42 million in 2017 to 20.12 million in 2018, while people under 50 dwindled from 32.62 million to 32.18 million.
The last factor, according to experts, is that more and more Koreans are getting married later in life because they focus on their careers first.
One 51-year-old businessman in central Seoul recently tied the knot with a woman 11 years his junior. "I didn't have time to get married because I devoted myself to running my family business since my 30s," he said. "I took my time and started looking for a marriage partner in my late 40s and I think that's how I was able to find a nice person."
